This work exemplifies Picasso's late-career mastery of the linocut technique. *Le Peintre et Son Modèle* is a prime example of his "reductive linocut" method developed in close collaboration with master printer Hidalgo Arnéra in Vallauris. The subject, the artist and his muse, recurs throughout Picasso’s career in various media and here is executed with graphic vitality and sculptural economy.
The mirrored date '7.2.65' inscribed in the block confirms execution in February 1965. The exaggerated forms — including the model’s hat and extended toe — are consistent with Picasso’s theatrical linocut style of the mid-1960s.
